No Bad Week – Episode 1

Episode 1: The Day Nigeria Almost Gave Up

Once upon a ballot box… Nigeria, a country of over 200 million,
went to the polls in 2023. They didn’t intend for it to be an election
— they meant it to be a rebirth.

Young people campaigned like never before. They marched. They designed posters.

They started podcasts. They believed again. But then the numbers came in. And something broke.

The air grew heavy. The streets were quiet, not because people didn’t care… but because they had no

more words. People usually filled social media with loud sighs.

A girl in Ibadan deleted her voter’s card from her phone gallery. A man in Kaduna

closed his civic tech app. Even the comedians stopped joking — democracy doesn't

feel funny anymore. It was as if the country had reached its emotional limit.

Nigeria looked at herself in the mirror and whispered, “I’m not meant for this." And for a moment, a moment, it felt like she might give up.

But not everyone stayed silent.

A street boy in Ajegunle posted: "Na who go save Nigeria if we all give up?

If this country no gree better, I go still dey fight.”That post didn’t go viral. But it sparked a conversation in a WhatsApp group.

And that led to a small meeting. From there, something began to grow…

To be continued...

Next week on No Bad Week: “The Children of 1999” — the sons and daughters of democracy who are now rewriting the rules.
